Kris Kristofferson was working as a helicopter pilot in Lafayette, Louisiana that flew oil rig workers back and forth from the Gulf of Mexico. My uncle had that exact same job. He'd keep a place in New Orleans and Lafayette. Kristofferson kept a place in Nashville. He'd write songs during the week and on weekends go home and pedal his songs. He found support in June Carter who gave his songs to Johnny Cash and he found a huge ally. Cash invited Kristofferson to perform with him at the Newport Folk Festival, which resulted in a record contract. This is his debut and it was a commercial failure at first, but the next year, Janis Joplin's cover of "Me and Bobby McGee" became a huge hit and the label re-released this album with a different cover and title, calling it Me and Bobby McGee. It has so many great songs on it, including "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down."
