Coconut Records is the project of musician/actor Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore and a lot of Wes Anderson films, the TV series Fargo, and you get it... his mom is Talia Shire of Rocky, his uncle Francis Ford Coppola, his cousin Sofia), and his music is fantastic. For the Shlep Music Club I have made only two or three contributions to the 17 series (for those that don't know, anyone is welcome to provide a compilation of 17 songs by any artist) and Coconut Records was one of mine.. that is how much I love this guy's music... and he's only put out three albums.
"West Coast" is one of my favorite songs, and the lyrics could not describe my feelings more effectively given the post-California depression I've been dealing with the past few weeks. Colorado is totally cool, and I will live here another five years at least, no problem, no regrets, happy to do so... but just spending time in San Diego, Joshua Tree and L.A. for a week was a revelation. I miss California a lot. Though I wasn't raised there, I moved there at 20, and spent 25 years there. It is part of me, and I feel a connection to it in a way that I am actually surprised at. I miss it.
Coconut Records is a great example of who I am at heart as a music fan. Pop hooks, overdubs, melodic harmonies... those of you that know me, know what I am talking about. That a man mainly known as an actor is largely unknown for his musical talent is a damn shame. Worse, he seems to have stopped making new music.
