It is imprinted on my memory so clearly, the first time I ever heard "Rehab". It was a Friday night and I was at the 16th Street Liquor store standing in line when it came on and I was gobsmacked. I absentmindedly asked the person next to me, "who is this?" and the person told me... and I have loved her ever since. I was very sad when she died in 2011. A few years later, Monica - who is also a big fan - and I were watching a documentary on her and at the halfway point, at which she was already a terrible alcoholic, the narration stated "then Amy and her boyfriend began to use crack" and it was like, damn Amy, you didn't stand a chance. She only put out two albums, but unlike Elliott Smith or Kurt Cobain, I don't get too sullen listening to her after the fact. I just think what a dear, sweet girl and then enjoy what she gave.
