The Gerbils were one of the bands that are part of the Elephant 6 Collective (The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Beulah, Elf Power, The Minders and more). It would take a class from Jack Black's teacher in School of Rock to map out the origins of each band and the musicians that played in all of the multiple incarnations. The Gerbils only put out two albums, this the second of them, being released after they had already broken up. The main guy, Scott Spillane, was a member of Neutral Milk Hotel, who met that band's leader - the "Salinger" of the indie movement - in Austin, Texas when working at a pizza place. I like almost every band I have ever heard that is considered a part of that collective. While this isn't the place to start, if you're interested (popular consensus places Neutral Milk Hotel's In an Aeroplane Over the Sea at the center), make sure to come back to this if you skip it for now.
