Dump is the name for Yo La Tengo bassist James McNews 4-track side project. This is one of my favorite albums - it consists entirely of Prince covers. Even better, he doesn't just cover his well-known songs, but does some of his better unknown songs: "The Beautiful Ones", "A Love Bizarre", "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" are a few. Lending the lo-fi DIY aesthetic to cover the songs of the man who was the master of DIY 4-track recording, makes these versions seem sincere, as opposed to gimicky. Just listen, I think no matter how big of a Prince fan you may be, you'll dig it. And if you don't normally like Prince - I know who you are - still check it out as his interpretations are very cool. This album reminds me of the only time I've been to New York City. I did a SongOtheDay entry while there for his cover of "A Love Bizarre", which was technically a Sheila E. release, but like "Erotic City", was Prince-penned and featured him on backing vocals. Man, I just listened to this again last night, and now I want to again. By the way, the title of the album is taken from the long-shelved Black Album that Prince recorded in 1987, but didn't see release officially until 1994... it is a lyric from the song "Bob George."
