Billy Joel - 1977 - The Stranger

This album is one that probably exists in half of all American record collections that were started in the 20th century. Three standard issues: Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, Carole King's Tapestry and this one. All deservedly so... they are all fucking great albums.

I don't know where to start, really. Okay, the cover. It is simply one of the best album covers of all-time. By most accounts, Lou Reed was an asshole, but I bet even he saw that cover and thought to himself, "Fuck Billy Joel (damn nice album cover)".

The opening song, "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" will ALWAYS remind me fondly of my stepdad, driving with him in his super cool, carpet interiored green 1976 Dodge van back when this song came out.

The back photo of the album will always remind me of Nick when he visited in Oakland in the mid-aughts and we listened to it. You can decide whether or not to click on it. I mean, we riffed on that for an hour. That back photo is better than many album covers.

This is an album that deserves to be listened to on vinyl. It will keep you good company. If you're sad, it will empathize. If you're happy, it'll make you feel even better.

The song "Vienna" just may be my all-time favorite song. The first week of the lockdown for Covid, I listened to it with Preslie about ten times (she liked it too!) and it will always hold a sweet spot in my heart.

God bless Billy Joel!
