The Psychedelic Furs - 1981 - Talk Talk Talk

Music, baseball, comedy... probably the three things that connect me to anyone that I am close to in this short life. Sometimes all three.

Glen and I met in March 1984 at Hillcrest Golf Course in Saint Paul, Minnesota. At the time, I was a huge Prince fan, and he loved Accept.

As that first year of our friendship went by, we ended up meeting at punk and new wave. I actually kind of remember the moment. He was going to see The Psychedelic Furs in concert and Talk Talk was opening. I wasn't that familiar, if at all, with the Furs, and he didn't know Talk Talk.

Well, anyone that knows Glen knows that the Furs are probably his favorite band. And while this wasn't the album that he introduced me to (he actually hooked me up with a cassette that had Forever Now on one side/Mirror Moves on the other.. perhaps from Nick?), it didn't take long to dig back to their first two albums, each one rawer than the other.

To me, those first four Furs albums are among the greatest four consecutive albums in rock history. I think The Replacements first four, Ramones first four, Stones' from Beggars through Exile (you get the idea) are other good examples... The Beatles from Rubber Soul through Abbey Road is like five.. anyhow...

"Pretty in Pink" isn't about an emo chick from the wrong side of the tracks sewing clothes for the prom with Andrew McCarthy. The "pink" is her skin. He's singing about a woman nude.
