The Caretaker - 2011 - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World

 

The Caretaker was the project of ambient artist Leyland James Kirby. It was inspired by the haunted ballroom scene in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). Kirby takes samples of old ballroom 78s and distorts and manipulates them to sound like music for that haunted ballroom. I recommend all of his music.

The first time I heard this was perfect. I was living on 16th St. in the Mission and there was a blackout at around 10 PM. I went out for a walk through the pitch black neighborhood listening to this. People were drinking on the street. The only real illumination came from homeless people equipped with lanterns. It was magical in a way, and certainly an incredibly wonderful coincidence for hearing this great album for the first time.
