Girls - 2009 - Album

My time in the Bay Area spanned 25 years. In that time, I lived in Marin (San Rafael, Fairfax, Novato), Oakland, San Francisco and Berkeley. I love them all.

From 2007 through 2012, I lived in the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco (16th & Guerrero), and even though I was already in my late 30s/early 40s at that time, I didn't feel old. San Francisco is a very arrested adolescent city. For one, it has a lot of gay people, who until recently, didn't have children all that often. It is super expensive, so unless you're rich, you're not living there with children no matter what your sexuality is, and finally, it is the west... go west, young man (and woman) and then see what you find... cause it will be you.

Hopefully.

Most don't find themselves in the traditional "find myself" kind of way. But they are seekers, and those are my people. I love the Bay Area, always.

In 2009, in that neighborhood, reading SF Weekly about this local band, I got the album. It encompasses a time and place like few albums do for me.

"Lust for Life" is one of my favorite songs.

It, and the songs that follow it, have a joie de vivre that lands with me the way a visit to Paris might have, but one that is my city. I know it isn't my city, per se, but it is. San Francisco (the Bay Area) is a part of me and always will be.

Girls didn't last long, but what they did in that short time, captured that time.
