I lived in Oakland for a decade or so, and having moved from Minnesota to, first, Marin County, and then a decade later to Oakland, well, you can imagine... it was a whole new experience. It wasn't gentrified then. Oh, I kinda wished it was... but it wasn't, and now I am glad that it wasn't. I remember being at a party with a few people from the east coast, and I mentioned that I would like to live in Brooklyn at some point and they agreed - strangers to each other at that point - that the Brooklyn I was speaking of no longer existed.. that living in Oakland was the closest I'd get to that. I trust them. Because now Oakland is kind of a new Brooklyn. You get it. The thing is, I did get to live in a pretty urban scene and soak up some culture and this album reminds me so much of west Oakland. I realize I heard it there the first time, but if you're familiar with that city, it wears its past on it. I love Oakland. I am sorry they've lost all of their sports teams. This album, which I have said next to nothing about, but have provided a lot of context.. let's leave it at that and enjoy.
