J Dilla passed away in 2006 at just age 32 from a combination of a rare blood disease and Lupus. This is his final release in while he was alive - his second solo album - and it came out on his 32nd birthday, just three days before his death. Not only is J Dilla one of the most influential hip-hop producers ever, but this album stands on its own as one of the great albums.
J Dilla grew up in Detroit, the son of musicians, and in high school made friends the people with whom he would start the influential hip-hop group Slum Village.
As his health declined for years before his passing, he became more solitary due to his limited mobility, and spent a lot of time working on music the way he would when he holed up in his basement as a teen.
It doesn't matter if you think you don't like hip-hop. This is an album that I guarantee you will like. It is a pastiche of beats, loops and syncopated rhythms and samples, all tracks a minute to two long. It would make a good pairing with Brainfreeze.
