The Sgt. Pepper of the Elephant 6 Collective lo-fi oeuvre. It is a stunning record with acolytes from all quarters (partial credit has to be given to the snotty girl from The Office who loved it so much), and its rise is probably owed as much as anything - even though it was over a year old at the time - to Napster. There are a few bands from that era, before Pitchfork took hold, that were truly "word of mouth" discoveries in that brief explosion of file sharing. If you think about it, Wilco was one too, even though they were far more well known. Neutral Milk Hotel only put out two proper albums and some other debris. Hearing it now, it really holds up. Even though Elephant 6 is sort of lazily, though understandably, associated with the "lo-fi" movement, this album is definitely not lo-fi sounding... hence the Sgt. Pepper comparison, which was recorded so creatively with a couple of 8-track recorders.
