You may notice that I have yet to post more than one album by any act on Shlep Dreams of Vinyl. When it comes to my favorites, it is really hard to pick one, and Hall & Oates are definitely one of my favorites of all time. I think of them in the same way of Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing - I liked movies before I saw it, but after that, I became a dedicated student of film. Prior to Hall & Oates, I loved the music of my parents - and they had some good taste - but it was Hall & Oates that truly captured my imagination. They were the first in a row of amazing dominoes: Prince, The Replacements, The Cure... a plethora of musicians in between.
The reason I chose H2O is that when I picture myself listening to vinyl, I picture myself at night (the way I picture myself during the day will be the next post) in an apartment, in I believe Philadelphia, where Daryl Hall was being interviewed on 60 Minutes in 1982 and talking about how he gets his ideas, and said looking out the window, saw a neon sign that said "Open All Night"... yeah, not all that artistic, but it has stayed with me to this day, 42 years later, and I do love this album. It is their darkest album. It is great.
By the way, why has there never been a conspiracy theory about this album cover. That is NOT Daryl Hall. That is some, what, stepdad, that held him at gunpoint to get the photo? Daryl Hall, we know what you look like. Maybe he was hungover that day.
