One of the most important musicians to ever grace the planet, this collection is not only essential from a cultural literacy perspective, but even more so, it is simply so damn enjoyable! You cannot listen to any of these sides and not find yourself feeling a little more okay with the world.
I started listening to jazz in the mid-1990s when alternative rock kind of bottomed out. I remember being in a hotel room in Monterey watching a jazz documentary (this is prior to the Ken Burns epic one that came out a few years later) and while I knew that I liked Miles Davis, it was Wynton Marsalis explaining the importance of Louis Armstrong so eloquently that I went out and bought all of these as single CDs. It cost a small fortune, but it was worth it.
