The first time I heard this album, I had to pause, and lean against a wall on Dolores Street in San Francisco, as it literally took my breath away. It was the opening song, "Flume". Not many songs have impacted me that way.
Of course, people seemed to like to dump on Bon Iver, claiming it overrated or whatever. Fuck 'em. It is a beautiful work and belongs in the pantheon.
Justin Vernon recorded it mostly on his own while recovering from a breakup, living at his family's cabin, alone, about an hour outside of Eau Claire, WI, which is about 90 miles from the Twin Cities. He planned on just drinking beer and watching TV and finally got some creativity. He stayed there for the three coldest months of the winter, hunted, and his dad brought him beer, cheese, bread, and other supplies.
Vernon feels like the romantic nature of his stay in the woods is overblown. He was mostly just depressed and slothful, but that time out, that time free of rent and other bullshit, did allow him to get to the heart of himself.
For Emma, Forever Ago is always going to be an album I admire.
