Link Wray - 1971 - Link Wray

 

Link Wray is best remembered for the groundbreaking song, 1958's "Rumble", which holds the distinction of the only instrumental song to be receive a radio ban (it was thought as an inducement to violence).

Wray, a Native American of the Shawnee tribe, had a huge influence on music, from roots rock to surf, garage and punk. Keith Richards cited him as a huge influence.

This 1971 album is a departure from the sound of which he was best known. Recorded in a converted chicken shack in Maryland, it has a sort of country stomp sound. It is a great sound and you can feel the exuberance of Wray in the music. He stated that he didn't care if the album didn't sell one copy, that he knew it was a really good album. He was right.
