I only just learned of Chastity Belt recently, when they caught my attention on an episode of Amoeba Records' What's in My Bag web series. This is their fifth album, but the first I have listened to, and I love them. They formed in Walla Walla, Washington in 2010, and are known for their sense of humor and sort of punk allegiance, compared often to Sleater-Kinney and other Riot Grrrrl bands. This album comes after a five year hiatus, mostly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and is decidedly not punk, and while there are glimmers of good nature, focuses more on the introspection the pandemic years inspired. But the songs are so beautifully done. I am smitten and looking forward to listening to their earlier music now. This album reminds me of Liz Phair's classic Exile in Guyville for some reason.
