Grace Jones was born in Jamaica in 1948 and moved, as a teenager, with her family to Syracuse, New York. She became a model, a very successful one, and then, in 1977, started with music. Her songs and popularity were a huge part of the disco scene. By the time she recorded this album, her fifth, in 1981, music had shifted from disco and this classic record is more of a combination of new wave and reggae. Sly & Robbie are the musical force behind the album. She covered some great songs - Bill Wither's "Use Me," Iggy Pop's "Night Clubbing," Flash and the Pan's "Walking in the Rain" and The Police's "Demolition Man" - in such a manner as to make them her own. Nick turned me onto this album back in 1990. We did a lot of mind-altering drugs that summer, and this was a perfect "comedown" album. I played it for Monica a few weeks ago, sans drugs, and she loved it.
