Before the venue that would become First Avenue became host to punk and new wave bands in 1980, Minneapolis had the the now legendary Jay's Longhorn Bar (1977-1980). Before Husker Du, The Replacements, and The Suburbs took over the scene, there were Minneapolis acts like Suicide Commandos, Curtiss A., Flamingo and, this band, The Hypstrz leading the way. The Hypstrz were a garage band that did covers - so they couldn't be considered punk, really - but their versions of songs were done with such energy that they helped usher in the very loosely defined punk era of the Twin Cities.
