Charles Wright & The 103rd Street Rhythm Band - 1970 - Express Yourself

 

I first became aware of Charles Wright & The 103rd Street Rhythm Band through N.W.A's quintessential 1988 debut album, in which they covered/sampled heavily, the title track. Even if that song was the only thing of note that Charles Wright and his band released, they'd still be remembered, but if that is all you've heard, then you are in for a treat. As funk/R&B from the early 70s goes, I am an acolyte of War and Sly and the Family Stone, and Charles Wright. The first two are still very popular, but Wright has drifted a bit in the 34 years since N.W.A. revived interest in him... but check out any one of his albums, and you'll be impressed. Whenever I get ready to post for this blog, I listen to the album first and cull from it songs that I might put on subsequent Shlep Hates Music comps. This album is only seven songs, but even still, I pulled every single song.
