Genesis - 1983 - Genesis

I know that the era of Phil Collins as lead singer of Genesis is largely dismissed, and I get it, the Peter Gabriel-led version was more groundbreaking, but that does not mean that the Phil era was all "Land of Confusion". In fact, he was the drummer during the Gabriel-led era, and the transition to him as lead singer is very cool. This album, the self-titled 1983 album is largely dismissed because of the top 40 hit "That's All", which is a shame, because it is a great album. My dad Ray bought this for me on one of our rare weekends together in 1983 (he also bought me the Eddie Money album that had "Where's the Party" on it... Ray rules).

I listened to this album through every phase of my life as a music fan-- from 1983 to now. It holds up. If you think "In the Air Tonight" is great, listen to the opener "Mama". Haunting.

The sorrow of some of the songs holds up in a way that they could have been featured in The Americans and caught fire.

It is a great album, trust me.
