Jon Brion - 2002 - Punch-Drunk Love [OST]

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of our great directors (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Licorice Pizza). He followed, what was then, his most acclaimed film - Magnolia - with what seemed like a truly strange one, a love story starring Adam Sandler. Sandler, up to that point, had really only played characters that could be considered the R-word. Infantile manboys. And here was a truly lovely little film, and the score was a huge part of it. Jon Brion is brilliant. His music is what I aspire to live up to as a subject. I want his music to score my life. It has a wondrous dizziness to it. It lives in between being awake and asleep, with that dizzy quality.. kind of like when something unexpected happens.. and yet there is a calmness to it that makes you feel that no matter what happens, you are not in shock. This is life. Beauty and sorrow, that lilt that comprises my favorite music. That PTA used Shelley Duvall's "He Needs Me" from Altman's Popeye (1980) was so fucking great.
